My Voice: What the STAR Pledge Taught Me

Emily S. | Wyomissing Jr./Sr. High School | Grade 11

Community Conversations for Change and the STAR pledge have taught me more about racism in our country than anything I have ever learned in school. It opened my eyes to the vast number of issues that people of color experience in our country right now. Racism is not a historical concept that ended in 1964: oppression of minorities is still something that people have to deal with every day….Change in the world starts small. STAR’s mission is to combat racism through conversation, education, and self-reflection. What we do may seem trivial, but change starts here. Change starts when people address and learn about issues. Change starts when people hear the perspectives of someone new. Change starts when people promise to be anti-racist every day. STAR will change this community one person at a time.
